Arizona, an American state in the southwestern region, is an integral part of the Western United States and the Mountain West states. Noted as the sixth-largest and the 15th most populous of the 50 states, Arizona's capital and biggest city is Phoenix. It is one of the Four Corners states, sharing borders with New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, California, Mexico, and a point with Colorado. The state's lengthy border with Mexico extends 389 miles, adjacent to the Mexican states of Sonora and Baja California.
Arizona, becoming the 48th state on February 14, 1912, was the last of the contiguous states admitted to the Union. It was part of the territory of Alta California in New Spain, then Mexico, before ceding to the United States after the Mexican–American War. Its southernmost portion was added later in 1853 through the Gadsden Purchase.
The state is distinct for its desert climate within the southern half, characterized by extremely hot summers and mild winters. Conversely, the northern half presents a contrasting landscape with forests of pine, Douglas fir, and spruce trees; the Colorado Plateau; mountain ranges like the San Francisco Mountains; and expansive, deep canyons. These northern areas enjoy moderate summer temperatures and experience significant winter snowfalls, making areas like Flagstaff, Alpine, and Tucson popular ski resorts.
Arizona is also home to the Grand Canyon National Park, in addition to numerous national forests, parks, and monuments. Approximately a quarter of Arizona's land comprises Indian Reservations, home to various Native American tribes.
